Door of the Day

Baden Baden Casino

Baden Baden, a town so cute they named it twice! I can't take credit for that saying, but it is certainly true. This town, near the French border, was fun to explore and people watch.

It's day three and our drive to Baden Baden was slow due to a stau, a traffic jam, that delayed us a bit. But once in town we  got started right away with a tour of the elaborate casino that has been around since 1821. I'm not much of a gambler but I loved the elegance of this place. Notice the orange devices around our necks in the first few pictures? These are whisper systems so everyone could hear what was being said without the tour leader having to raise their voice.

After the casino tour we did a quick unload of baggage from our bus and checked into our hotel. Tara took some of us on a bus ride through town to get to Europe's steepest funicular that would take us to the Merkur Summit. Here we enjoyed the scenery and a beer with mom's buddy, Herb. He was on the tour with his wife.

Once we returned to the city we decided to find a restaurant serving jagerschnitzel. It only took a few trips around the city center until we found the Lowenbrau and they had the mushroomy goodness. We sat outside, planned the next stop of the evening and and shared a tasty meal.

After dinner we took a stroll along the Lichtentaler Alee. This paved walkway was developed in the 19th century and follows the river Oos. We saw many grand homes, towering trees and a beautiful rose garden. It was fun to watch couples walking along this path and we imagined that they must be going to spend the evening at the casino.

We stayed one night at the Heliopark Bad zum Hirsch. A small room, but it was cozy and decorated cute.

So many juices to choose from. I took what I thought was tomato but imagine my taste buds surprise when I found out it was beet juice! It was pretty good and I had seconds.

Back in our room we soaked our tired feet in the mineral water that came from the tap into the bathtub. Our busy day in Baden Baden ended with watching 'Big Bang Theory' in German and this glorious sunset.
