Day 8, Saturday July 14

Mom Wow!

  • Munich is so big and busy!

  • Neuschwanstein!

Munich! My last visit here was less than 24 hours so I was very excited to spend two nights in this busy city. Mom was looking forward to having a pretzel the size of her head at the Hofbrauhaus. Sadly, there were so many people in town that she didn't get to have that pretzel experience. There's a great reason to come back! Tara loves Munich and had great stories to tell us. Looking at her heart drawing on our itinerary tells it all and why she was the perfect guide for this tour.

Day 7 began with one last look at Switzerland as we walked through the village with all our gear. We filled the gondola with people and luggage and silently marveled at the Alps and everything we experienced in this beautiful country.  One of our tour mates was ill and wouldn't be joining us on the remainder of our trip so our thoughts were with him and his wife. Tara calmly took care of all the details needed to make our new friend comfortable. Luckily that is also her job while she is not guiding so the situation was in good hands. Time to find Joost who was waiting with the bus to take us to Munich.

It was a long bus ride to Munich but the bus has to stop every two hours for a WC break. We had lunch at a fun cafe called Rosenberger that had lots of yummy buffet food to choose from. We could even use the receipt from the WC visit to buy something from the store. (Tara told us to always keep coins in our pocket since most WC's have a small cost) Once in Munich we quickly checked in to our hotel and then gathered for dinner. Tonight we were eating as a group at the Augustiner, the oldest brewery in Munich. Here Tara showed us the correct way to carry multiple beer steins and we enjoyed a fabulous meal. On the walk back to the hotel we were able to take the time to wonder through Marienplatz, the central square in Munich, and see the Rathaus (the new town hall which actually looks very old) and the Viktualienmarkt's Maypole which advertises the trades in Munich.

We stayed at the Hotel Am Viktualienmarkt, a cute place right next to the market action. There was so much breakfast food that it was served on two levels.

Day 8! It started with a city walking tour led by Mats. We saw beautiful churches and buildings along with a frustrated Devil's footprint because he had been fooled. It was interesting because we heard a similar legend in Trier.

So many beautiful churches and it was nice to be able to go inside and admire the interior. We also learned about the secret path citizens would take to avoid saluting members of the Nazi party.

After the city tour many of us went to the English Garden, one of the world's largest urban parks, watched the surfers and had lunch. It was then back to our hotel to meet with Ally to buy Birkenstocks! We had been waiting since day one to purchase this perfect souvenir. The busy day ended with a few of us having dinner together to escape the crowds and a passing rain shower.

Rubbing the boar's nose is supposed to bring you back to Munich and it worked! Here I am in 2018 and 2016.

Not sure what everyone was looking at but it's often easy to forget to take the time and look up. You just might see something truly amazing! This statue in the Viktualienmarkt  represents teachers. I work in a school so I really liked this statue.

We had a WC break at the Hofbrauhaus. Notice the blue checkered pinwheel on the ceiling? It covers up a swastika. Today was the Gay Pride parade and Munich was packed!

Day nine means Neuschwanstein! This castle pops into so many people's minds when they think of German castles. It was the personal project of King Ludwig II but he only spent a few nights there when he, and his doctor, were found dead, floating in a nearby lake. Some say he was crazy and committed suicide or was he murdered?  Hmmm...you'll have to decide for yourself after you hear the whole story. While we were waiting for our castle tour to start I grabbed a photo with my awesome buddy, Paige. She was on the tour with her parents and brother. Mom and I also walked over to Marienbrucke to get the famous view of the castle. Lots of people on the bridge so we didn't stay there long. Next stop on our adventure is Salzburg!
