Door of the Day

Black Forest Open Air Museum

Mom Wow!

  • Thrilling Luge ride

  • Thatched roofs at the Open Air Museum

On our way to the Black Forest Open Air Museum, we made a stop at the Rodelbahn alpine luge ride in Gutach. It was the first time Tara had been to this one and from the comments people made, I'm sure it won't be the last. It was so fun and my mom overcame her fear and had fun, too! How many 77 year olds do you think go on a luge ride? I'm sure the people behind us were yelling at us to go faster but oh well, it was a very cool experience.

A speeding luge ride down a mountain! Well, actually it was more like 16mph, but it felt much faster.

Our museum guide, Susan, told us how hard life was for those folks living during this time as they mixed pagen beliefs with religious ones. Everyone had one spoon to eat with and they hung it on the wall until the next meal. This place really made history come to life.

We were able to see the machine that was used to grind the wheat in action. It made a loud sound and spewed out the finished product through this face carving. My mom went AWOL for a few minutes but I finally saw her with some other tour members. They had found a woman baking bread.  Mom brought back some fresh bread for us to share at lunch. We had some very tasty bratwurst, sauerkraut and a refreshing beer from a local food stand. We were almost done eating when Tara surprised us all with a piece of Black Forest cake and a shot of Kirschnaps, cherry schnapps. It was then time to board the bus and get ready to go to Switzerland! I had been in Grindelwald, Switzerland for less than 24 hours on my last Europe trip and I was so excited to share the Wow moment of seeing the Alps with my mom.

At the end of day four we have arrived in Switzerland! Joost drove us to Stechelberg where he parked the bus. Then he joined us as we took two cable cars to Murren. Murren is a beautiful, peaceful town high on the mountain and the view from our room gave a hint of what was behind the clouds. We gathered at the hotel for a wonderful dinner together and went to bed full of anticipation of the sights and scenery to come during our three days in Switzerland.
