Day 10, Monday July16

Mom Wow!

  • Walk along the Monschburg and lunch at a little cafe overlooking the city

Years of watching the Sound of Music made me smile as we entered Salzburg. I hoped to find many of the places that I loved from the movie as images of Captain Von Trapp and Maria filled my heart.

Here's a question for you. Do you think I can get a cork out of a wine bottle without a cork screw? Read on to find the answer!

Door of the Day

Salzburg, Austria

Overlooking Salzburg from Hohensalzburg Fortress.

Once we settled into our cute Austrian hotel we headed to our group dinner. All our meals so far have been absolutely yummy and always had a vegetarian option. Along the way Tara pointed out the 'air signs'. She had told us about them on the bus ride. Another Rick Steves perk is the informative bus rides. Tara always made sure we were well informed with history and personal experiences of the city we were about to enter. Back to air signs...these are metal signs that advertise what business is located there. They were very ornate and in the early years of the city they didn't need words. There is a scroll located inside the sign that tells the history of that location.

Day 10 began with a city walking tour led by Brigette. She showed us the beautiful Mirabell Gardens, home to many Sound of Music locations. Fans will notice the statues and archway from the movie. This garden was just minutes from our hotel. Check out the fortress high on the mountain, that's our quest for the afternoon. Our itinerary allowed free time in the afternoon so we could go exploring on our own. Most days of this tour there was time to be on our own and wander   around, dream and explore.

Salzburg is rich in history, ornate churches and is home to Mozart.  It's an easy town to walk around and I loved imagining life here centuries ago. If you stand at just the right spot at the Salzburg Cathedral you can see a crown line up perfectly with the statue of Mary. Our city tour showed us amazing architecture everywhere we looked.

Our city tour ended at a Farmers Market where we grabbed a yummy pretzel and then wandered over to St. Peter's cemetery (another Sound of Music site!). The graves are very well taken care of because the plots are rented as long as a relative is alive to maintain them. We then took the funicular to Hohensalzburg Fortress which had awesome views of the city. We walked along the Monchsburg and had spinach dumplings at a cafe that is also a youth hostel. Then it was an elevator back to the city and a meandering walk to the hotel where we were ready to rest our legs. We were so full from lunch that dinner was just a snack in our room and a bottle of wine we've been carting around since Baden Baden .

Ready to find out about the wine bottle cork? We were hoping there would be a cork screw in the room like most of the other hotels but there wasn't. I looked online and found a YouTube video on how to make a key into a corkscrew. You should of seen me, towel wrapped around the bottle, mom's key in hand, trying to get just the right angle like the video showed. It was hilarious! Needless to say, that didn't work. I went to the front desk to ask if they had one but all their wine bottles were screw top. The gal in the kitchen looked through all the drawers and finally found one! It worked great and the wine tasted so good after our crazy wine bottle opening event.

We stayed two nights at the Cityhotel Trumer Stube. A quiet location but just minutes from all the action. A great perk of Rick Steves tours are centrally located hotels.
