Door of the Day

Hallstatt, Austria

It's hard to find the words to describe this adorable town. Located right on the water's edge it was full of cute buildings, narrow alleys and flowers everywhere you looked.

Photo opp on the way to Hallstatt.

On the way to Hallstatt we made a stop for a photo and nabbed a picture of Joost with his bus. The bus was only a few months old and he even has his name on it! Once in Hallstatt a brief rain shower had us scrambling for cover under some trees while we waited for the boat that would give us a private tour around the lake. When the boat arrived we had smooth sailing and no rain as we watched the beautiful scenery unfold in front of us.

Once we checked into our hotel we took the funicular to the Rudolfsturm Sky Walk. At one point on the ride up the track separated and we passed another funicular going the opposite direction.  It had been awhile since breakfast so we joined some tourmates for Minestrone soup, bread and wine at the cute cafe near the funicular. It was delicious. Afterwards we walked over to the skywalk for a magnificent view of Hallstatt, the Alps and the serene lake.

Back in Hallstatt we meandered through the town and noticed the beautiful flowers everywhere. Swans in the lake were also fun to watch. We walked through a church cemetery and I paid a visit to the Bone Chapel. This chapel held the unearthed remains of Hallstatt citizens once the cemetery got too full. The paintings on the skull told the name and a brief history of the person. This practice isn't done anymore since so many now choose to be cremated.

So much to see in this little village with spectacular views, cute cats and plenty of people. It was a different, and very calm, experience in town once all the day trippers had left. We ended day 11 with a drink on the deck with some tourmates and then a fabulous group dinner together at our hotel. The fresh caught trout was very tasty.

We stayed one night at the Hotel Gruner Baum. It was right on the water's edge and our room was huge. Check out this view from our balcony! The breakfast was very good with so many choices that filled three rooms.
